Tonight and tomorrow, November 3 and 4, you can catch Corporeal Imago in Throe. Throe explores our interdependence in the aftermath of our future disaster with a stunning intersection of aerial acrobatics, contemporary dance, and visual theatre. It features six powerful performers in a world of aerial ropes, as they cling to what remains in the throes of survival. While Throe depicts us at the mercy of our circumstances, it also highlights the resilience and hope in collectivity. For a beautiful teaser video and images, go here. Tonight and Saturday, November 4 you still have the opportunity to join Ballet BC in their season opener, HERE. The evening features the return of one of the most popular works in Ballet BC’s repertoire by a legendary creator, an anticipated world premiere from a choreographer new to the company, and an epic large ensemble piece. November 2 to November 8, STAND Festival offers up a beautiful selection of performing arts by and for immigrant and refugee performing artists. Through a series of free workshops, panel discussions and public showcase performances, both live and online, STAND supports and amplifies the creations and voices of newcomers to Canada through the arts. The goal of STAND Festival is to centre and support immigrant and refugee voices while addressing social issues concerning race, class, and gender. The programming offers intriguing performances, knowledge-sharing workshops, panel discussions, and the chance to connect with inspiring newcomer artists who share their stories of survival, courage, failure, and hope. On Thursday, November 9, the Dance Centre presents Calle Verde and Jhoely Triana in their Discover Dance! Series. Calle Verde (comprising Maria Avila, Michelle Harding, and Peter Mole) and Jhoely Triana are in the vanguard of a wave of Vancouver artists who honour the traditions of flamenco while experimenting with the form. This double bill features their latest creations in a thrilling performance that showcases flamenco’s technical brilliance, emotional power, and heart-stirring music and singing. November 9 to November 11, the dynamic world premiere of Accumulation is a transcontinental performance project by Co.ERASGA Dance, in collaboration with participating artists from the United States (New York), Canada and France. Body, dance, movement, sound, costumes, sculpture and visual objects were all components in the making of this unique live performance event. Accumulation is a creative venture that speaks to the challenges of art and environmental stewardship. Can we raise and push our minds, resources, practices and concerns to attune our creativity and respond to our alarming and devastating fragile ecology? The piece seeks to question our human relational, place, and time on environmental concerns presently faced by an alarming future never witnessed before in our natural world. Thursday-Saturday November 16-18, The Dance Centre Global Dance Connections series presents Stand Up Dance: Anatomalia: anatomy + anomaly + femalia. An exciting world premiere created by Berlin-based queer Canadian choreographer Meagan O’Shea, Anatomalia is an adventurous international collaboration, and a passionate collective healing of the damage done to ‘femalia’. Bringing together a cast of five exceptional dancers from Canada, Mexico and Europe, original sound and design, and local participants, the work cycles between shame and curiosity, repulsion and desire, fear and trust, to release the trauma stored in the body, and reclaim joy.
