Welcome back to the Friday Round-Up, a place for the Vancouver community of dancers and dance lovers to come together and share what is going on in the local dance community. In this new world in which we find ourselves, it is now more important than ever to find ways to connect and share all the many new and innovative ways in which we create, communicate and relate in the world of dance. Here at DanceHouse we cannot contain our excitement to tell you about our upcoming season – and much of it back in the theatre! How good it will be to celebrate out love of dance together again.

Let’s begin by sharing a few highlights of the upcoming DanceHouse season. Opening the season in just over a months time on October 22 and 23, Rubberband brings to Vancouver a work titled Ever So Slightly. “Delicate, ferocious, and subtle, Ever So Slightly conveys revolt, chaos, and the search for resolution.” – The Dance Enthusiast Also this fall, DanceHouse audiences will experience Red Sky Performance in Trace. Some of you were treated to a glimpse of the work in the film More Than Dance, We Are A Movement, offered as part of DanceHouse’s 2020-21 Digidance series. In Trace, you will experience the full manifestation in all its power and magnificence. And we suggest that you buy your tickets early for Kidd Pivot‘s stunning work Revisor March 30 – April 2 – back by popular demand, so don’t miss it! Also in the spring, company Winter Guests from Norway, known for stisories of the contemporary world using words, video, music and movement, brings their work Story, story, die. And there is so much more to share this season, including our Speaking of Dance series and DanceHouse One. September 13-18, F-O-R-M Digital Festival celebrating the body in motion through film will take place online. Now in it’s sixth year, the Festival offers movement-based films by youth and emerging artists presenting thoughtful intersections of movement and film that embody community and culture. Check out the Festival’s 20 short films from 9 countries around the world, 9 world premieres from 11 youth + emerging commissioned artists. FORMations, technology + interaction, workshops, artist talks + more! There is an amazing All Access Pass, based on a sliding scale, that lets you experience all that the Festival has to offer!

Friday September – Sunday September 26, celebrate the art of Flamenco Dance at the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival 2021. As one of the few celebrated festivals devoted to flamenco art outside of Spain, the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival nurtures flamenco’s hybridized roots in Sephardic, Persian, Gypsy and Indian cultures. Running for over 20 years, VIFF is produced by Flamenco Rosario. The weekend offers a number of shows, including La Otra Orilla (Montreal) in Rite and Alma de España Flamenco (Victoria) in Familia, as well as To Victor with Love… by Flamenco Rosario, to honour and celebrate the life of Victor Kolstee, musical director of Flamenco Rosario and the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival. All events are offered both live in the theatre and also live streamed. More info and tix are available here.

This year, the Dance Centre will mark the 20th anniversary of their building, Scotiabank Dance Centre,with special programming including exhibits, publications and a film, in addition to residencies, performances, and a special edition of the annual Scotiabank Dance Centre Open House. Friday September 24 – Saturday October 9 Together/Apart, an online dance project part of Co.ERASGA’s 2021 season programming, will premier in celebration of BC Culture Days. The project features seven duets, created at various stages throughout the pandemic. These intimate works feature artists: Alison Denham + Billy Marchenski; Deanna Peters + Alvin Erasga Tolentino; Marc Arboleda + Kayla De Vos; Joshua Ongcol + Antonio Somera Jr.; Kris-Belle Mamangun + Naishi Wang; Brian Solomon (Electric Moose)’+ Kevin Fraser (Immigrant Lessons). Tickets are free/by donation. After you register, you’ll receive a link to all the films on September 24th. You can join for the premiere at 7pm PDT or watch at a later date because the films will be available for you to access until October 9th. Tix
