The Friday Round-Up

Friday Round-Up, a place for the Vancouver community of dancers and dance lovers to come together and share what is going on in the local dance community. In this new world in which we find ourselves, it is now more important than ever to find ways to connect and share all the many new and innovative ways in which we create, communicate and relate in the world of dance. So if you have something you would like to share with the Friday Round-Up, please send it to debora@dancehouse.ca. We look forward to hearing from you!

November 24 to 27, treat yourself to the experience of Red Sky Performance in Trace, a DanceHouse presentation, co-presented with SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs. Astronomy, astrophysics and ancestral knowledge meet in this mesmerizing work about our ancestral origins that stretch across the Milky Way, from the stars to the atoms burning brightly inside of us here on Earth. Through highly kinetic contemporary dance, Trace maps Anishinaabe sky and star stories into being on the stage, offering us a rare glimpse into our origin as well as our future evolution. Under the direction of Sandra Laronde, choreographed by Jera Wolfe, and accompanied by composer Eliot Britton’s remarkable score, the Red Sky performers create a richly embroidered constellation, tangled with light, myth, and movement. The vision of Red Sky Performance derives from founder Sandra Laronde (Misko Kizhigoo Migizii Kwe which means “Red Sky Eagle Woman” in the Anishinaabemowin (Ojibway) language) from the Teme-Augama Anishinaabe (People of the Deep Water). Her vision is dedicated to expanding and elevating the ecology of contemporary performance informed by Indigenous worldview and culture. Watch a short teaser video of Trace here.

“Trace smacked of the cosmic, and the piece’s extraordinary sounds and shapes stunned…” – The Arts Fuse.

And if you are planning on seeing the show on November 25 or 26, don’t miss Speaking of Dance Post-Show Talks, hosted by Margaret Grenier, Executive and Artistic Director for the Dancers of Damelahamid and producer of the Coastal Dance Festival. At SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, Woodwards, 8 pm and 2 pm matinee Saturday November 27. Tix
