Nikki Viscera in PARASOMNIA
Photo Kyra Creative.

Saturday, May 20 and Tuesday, May 22, Viscera, a new Vancouver-based production company that brings the genre of horror to the stage through dance and movement focused productions, presents PARASOMNIA a disquieting dance nightmare. The night has come. The day is done. It’s time to sleep. Sleep is the most mysterious part of the human experience. Science has linked sleep to memory processing and emotional stabilizing. Sleep is essential. And although we need it, sometimes sleep is not so restful. For some of us, sleep invites more than just sweet dreams. When others are resting peacefully, we experience PARASOMNIA. In the dark of your room. In the quiet of the witching hour. There is something standing in the corner. You can just barely see it, but you are certain it is there. And it’s inching its way closer to you…Join our sweet little Lamb as she weaves and wanders her way through her worst nightmares. But is it all a dream? Can anyone tell the difference between the waking world and reality? This is all in her head… right? We are awakening our first-ever stage show, PARASOMNIA. At the Scotiabank Dance Centre, 8 pm Tix

Thursday-Saturday May 18-20, check out the Arts Umbrella Dance Company Season Finale. Season Finale will leave you transfixed and transformed. At the Vancouver Playhouse, 7:30 pm, and matinee Saturday, May 20, 2:30 pm. Tix

Angélique Willkie Confession Publique
Photo Kevin Calixte

Friday-Saturday May 26-27, see MAYDAY / Mélanie Demers in Confession Publique, an autobiographical solo with Angélique Willkieas its muse. The work takes on themes of privacy and secrecy, delving into the marshy depths of the psyche in a revolt against the vulgar self-exposure that bombards us every day. An examination of nobility and elegance in the ways we acknowledge our shortcomings, our flaws, and our manufacturing defects. Seeking confession as a poetic gesture, a necessity, a small concession to our vanity. An intimate dive into self-interrogation, revealing mysteries that form and structure what the work and what it confides in us. Introspection has no choice but to come face-to-face with its inevitable opponent — confession. At the Scotiabank Dance Centre, 8 pm. Tix

Wednesday – Saturday, May 31-June 3, Rachel Meyer will share her work Many Worlds. 4 dancers and 4 musicians explore individual trajectories, interconnection and the boundaries of the performance space and time. A series of events is repeated numerous times, eventually collapsing notions of independence or predictability. Subtle and drastic changes alter relationships, perceptions and outcomes, as we confront the tension between what is seen and what is unseen. At 298 Alexander Street Vancouver, 8:30 pm. Tix
